CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

As the world emerges from a global pandemic, it is now faced with a new reality marked by economic, social, political, and democratic uncertainties and disruptions. Many countries around the world have experienced challenges of varying significance exposing important rifts within their populations (e.g., January 6, 2021 events in the United States, armed conflict in Ukraine, environmental crisis in Ethiopia, high levels of inflation (e.g., Brazil, Turkey), Freedom Convoy movement in Canada, regime change in Afghanistan). This summit zeroes in on this dynamic and invites participants to think through and reimagine the role and effects of communication locally and internationally. Civil society, governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), elected officials, public sector organizations, and businesses are faced with new challenges requiring innovative approaches and solutions. From a broader perspective, this summit like those in the past examines these elements through the lens of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The summit welcomes papers, group projects, panel proposals, keynotes, and dialogue sessions addressing new narratives, communication practices, messaging, storytelling, as well as public outreach and engagement strategies related to current social, political, and economic uncertainties and future challenges. Examples of topics include economic and political crises, effects of inflationary pressures on supply chains and globalization, domestic and international societal and political violence, effects of populism on elections and governments, protest movements advocating for social justice and equality, political polarization, climate change, and development and prosperity.

The summit - organized by the Emerson-Blanquerna Center for Global Communication - will take place in Washington DC (United States) on November 4, 2022. The summit welcomes contributions from scholars, students, independent researchers, communication practitioners, governmental officials, NGO practitioners, business leaders, as well as other change agents at all levels of the international civil society.
