International Epilepsy Day
Today, February 12, is International Epilepsy Day, which has been celebrated since 2015 by the International Bureau for Epilepsy and the International League Against Epilepsy.
The aim of the celebration is to inform about this neurological condition, which is suffered by some 65 million people worldwide.
Epilepsy is a chronic disorder of the brain that causes seizures. It is also the most common neurological disease and can affect anyone regardless of age or sex. Current treatments have varied efficacy, with 30% of those affected not responding to any method.
In the Middle Ages, epilepsy was confused with supernatural possessions, causing a high level of discrimination against those with the condition.
