Visit from Kaeti Hinck, Data Editor of The Washington Post
The data editor of The Washington Post, Kaeti Hinck, gave a masterclass at Blanquerna FCRI, within the framework of the Fourth Conference on Data Journalism held in Madrid.
Hinck explained the work of the data team she runs at the Post and the close relationship they have with infographics and the story team, responsible for new narratives. At the paper, they develop between 8 and 15 projects at a time, with the collaboration of up to 30 journalists from the newsroom.
Hinck recommended students to learn the foundations of journalism well: "We need to know how to tell stories and the basic tools of journalism; the rest is time and experimentation." Alas, Hinck considers that data journalism will not replace traditional journalism, but will complement it. You can retrieve the interview done by student Adrià Rocha.
Students in the fourth year of the subject of Digital Journalism taught by professors Santiago Justel, Edith Stone and Elisa Vivas, participated. The presentation was made by Professor Karma Peiró, director of «Nació Digital».
The School has also been the place where many other professionals in data journalism have come to explain their work, such as the data editor of The L.A. Times, Ben Welsh, the member of the Open Knowledge Foundation Michael Bauer, the associate editor of Digital Strategy of The New York Times, Aron Pilhofer, and director of the Nieman Lab at Harvard, Joshua Benton. You can retrieve the interviews with them in this playlist.
